The process waste generated at the Britannia and Lemieux Island Water Purification Plants (WPPs) originates from both the settling and filter backwashing processes. Since the plants were built, these process wastes from the plants, comprised of settled and filtered particulate materials, have been discharged back to the Ottawa River. Following provincial orders to discontinue this practice, the City of Ottawa completed a study in October 2002 that followed the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process for a Schedule B project, to select a management practice to divert these materials from the river.
The selected alternative consisted of discharging the process sludges to the City’s sanitary collection system for treatment at ROPEC. The project is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled to begin in this spring.
Open House on Thursday February 105-8 pm at the Filter Gallery at Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant
This open house will present information on the implementation process and overall design elements of the waste management project. CH2M HILL has been retained to assist the City of Ottawa with the engineering design for this project.
