DRINKING WATER OPEN HOUSES IN YOUR COMMUNITY

VARIOUS LOCATIONS DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE - Thursday, June 19, 2008

Join us for one of ten Drinking Water Open Houses being hosted around the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Region throughout the month of June. You can learn more about the Clean Water Act and what your local municipality and Source Protection Committee are doing to keep your drinking water supply clean, safe and plentiful.

These information sessions will be of particular interest to landowners who live near municipal wells or drinking water intakes. They may be eligible for grants for projects that protect water sources. We also encourage people to review and comment on the draft Terms of Reference (work plan and budget) of the local Source Protection Committee.

Comment deadline is June 20 so please visit the website, join us at the Open Houses or visit your local Conservation Authority office at your earliest convenience.

There are 12 municipal drinking water systems in the Mississippi-Rideau area —seven of those draw water from underground aquifers using wells and five take water from local rivers. These 12 systems treat and distribute potable drinking water to 84 percent of the people living in the watershed region. The remaining 16 percent rely on private wells or intakes for their drinking water. Visit your local open house, from 4 to 8 pm (formal presentation at 6:30) to learn more. Everyone welcome!
