Paddlefest

MEC Paddlefest is an opportunity to learn how to paddle, pick up new skills, and test out different boats. It is a collaborative celebration of all forms of paddling that will bring our community together to engage in learning and fun. This one day family event has something for all ages and skill levels – whether you’re a beginner or seasoned paddler – the host of informative on-water and on-land sessions will be certain to engage all who come to participate. There will be plenty of demo canoes and kayaks from our exhibitors as well – so come on out and test drive a few!

If you think paddling looks fun but you’re not interested in being out on the water, there will also be plenty of land sessions to take part in. From yoga for paddlers, to GPS navigation, cooking in the backcountry, or planning a long trip, there’s bound to be something to peak your interest.

Equipment

MEC and other vendors will provide equipment such as boats, paddles, and PFDs, but if you would like to bring your own boat to use, please do. If you have your own PFD, please bring it along. Any personal equipment that you bring with you will be your own responsibility throughout the day.

Make sure you wear appropriate clothing and be prepared to get wet! Don’t forget your sunscreen! If you want to try courses that involve capsizing, such as a rolling clinic, please bring the appropriate immersion clothing for the water temperature and a warm change of clothes for later. Feel free to speak to staff at the store prior to the event if you’re unsure of what the appropriate gear might be.

The Mooney’s Bay Canteen will be open and selling snacks and lunch items, but feel free to pack your own food. Don’t forget your water bottle!

Participation

Everyone is welcome, even if you don’t swim or have never been in a boat. Beginner clinics are available for those new to paddling, or just attend some of the land-based sessions.

Check-in begins at 8:30am at the MEC registration tent. Please come and find the MEC tent when you arrive and they will confirm your classes, have you sign any outstanding waivers, and direct you to the correct location for your classes.

View the clinic descriptions and find out which are right for you.

Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your workshop’s start time. All on-water participants will need to sign a waiver and wear a PFD or lifejacket.

Paddlefest will happen rain or shine! There is limited shelter so bring your rain gear just in case.

Paddling is a watersport, so you’re bound to get at least a little wet. Don’t let the rain stop you from having fun. However, in the event of lightning and dangerous weather, the on-water activities may be temporarily suspended.

There will be activities and events for kids to participate in throughout the day. It is important to note however that no childcare facilities exist on site. Adults are expected to supervise the children they bring and be present onsite during the workshops they attend.

Registration begins Monday May 9th, and will run through until Friday May 27, closing at 6:00pm. Any remaining available spots will be open for registration at MEC Paddlefest, on a first come, first served basis. The clinic schedule will be available in-store on May 9th. The cost for registering will be $5 per land session and $10 per water clinic.
