Main agenda topics are:
City of Ottawa Intake Protection Zones – Preliminary Draft studies for Britannia and Lemieux Island
o The Committee will review preliminary draft surface water studies for the municipal drinking water intakes operated by the City of Ottawa at Britannia and Lemieux Island.
o These studies show:
Maps of the Ottawa River where the City of Ottawa draws drinking water;
If areas upstream of the intakes are susceptible to potential contamination; and
What land use activities could pose a contamination risk if they were located in vulnerable areas upstream of the intakes.
If the Committee approves study findings as “draft for public consultation”, open houses will be held near Britannia and Lemieux Island to talk to local residents about the findings and get their input.
Assessment Report Due Date – Proposed Extension Request
The Committee will consider requesting an extension from the Ministry of the Environment to submit an Assessment Report in September 2010. A draft letter is included in the agenda package that outlines why our region requires an extension. A number of other regions are also requesting extensions.
Well Aware Program – Proposed Letter of Endorsement
The Committee will consider submitting a letter to Ontario’s Minister of the Environment that endorses the Well Aware Program and asks the Province to continue supporting this program.

The Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee is a 16 member multi-stakeholder committee overseeing the development of Source Protection Plans in the Mississippi and Rideau watersheds. These plans are being developed under Ontario’s Clean Water Act, 2006. The Clean Water Act is focused on protecting sources of municipal drinking water from becoming contaminated or overused.
