Waste Management of Canada has initiated an environmental assessment (EA) seeking approval for a new landfill footprint at the existing Ottawa Waste Management Facility (Carp Road). The extended landfill footprint is one component of an overall plan to open a new waste management facility called the West Carleton Environmental Centre. The proposed facility will include:
The new landfill is the only component of the project that requires approval under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). The purpose of the EA is to study the potential effects of the proposed new landfill on the environment. The proposal must be approved by the provincial Ministry of the Environment before it can go ahead. Ministry spokeswoman Kate Jordan said the proposal will be evaluated after an environmental assessment is completed.
An initial round of Public Open Houses to discuss the development of the draft terms of reference and the rationale/need for a new landfill is scheduled for the week of April 19 to April 22.
