Spring into action
Ecology Ottawa and the Living Lightly Project present the “Spring into Action! Visions in Living Lightly” film competition on now until March 18,2009.

Shifting to an environmentally friendly lifestyle can be challenging. Nonetheless, through simple and practical everyday actions, many people are “living lightly” – lessening their impact on the Earth and making a big difference. With the goal of inspiring people to live more lightly, Ecology Ottawa and the Living Lightly Project have launched an exciting short film contest.
Local aspiring filmmakers are asked to respond to David Chernushenko’s solutions-based environmental film Be the Change, by creating their own short film. “We do not want to see more stories about problems. We know all that,” said Mr Chernushenko . “What can we do about the problems by approaching them as challenges, as opportunities? What concrete actions are people taking to reduce their impact on the Earth and what rewards are they getting?”

Filmmakers, environmentalists, and Ottawas with uplifting stories about their switch to a more sustainable lifestyle are invited to participate in the competition. “We want people to tell us their stories,” said Ecology Ottawa’s events committee member Ashley Knapp. “Many people have found real, practical, everyday
solutions and can be an inspiration to others.”

Contest entries may be of documentary or dramatic style and they must be 2 to 5 minutes in length. Entries may be in French, English, or both. During the screenings, judges from both the filmmaking and environmental communities will determine the first place winner of each age category (under 25 and over 25) and the audience will vote for their favourite. All contest entries must be submitted via the website www.livinglightly.ca/videocontest/ by March 18, 2009.

Finalist videos will be screened, along with Mr. Chernushenko’s Be the Change film on Saturday, April 4th, 2009, from 1pm-4pm, at the National Library and Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington Street.
