Get ready for a “heritage hockey” experience! Ottawa Riverkeeper’s first-ever Co-Ed Outdoor Hockey Tournament is coming to the Ottawa River on Saturday, February 2, 2008. Here’s a chance to play Canada’s national game in a friendly outdoor atmosphere while supporting Ottawa Riverkeeper.
The format will be pond-hockey style—four-on-four, no goalies, no slap shots. Fun will take precedence over winning, with teams being awarded “Lady Byng” points for skill and good sportsmanship. If this sounds like your kind of hockey, get some friends together and register your team – details are below. Act fast because we only have room for twelve teams this year!
If you’d like to help with this event, or if you’d just like to find out more, please contact Jamie Findlay at (613) 234-9171 (jfindlayesq@yahoo.ca).
1. The format is four-on-four with no goalies. Each team is allowed two subs, making a total of six players. At least two of the six players must be female. A team must have a minimum of one female player on the ice at all times.
2. This is a non-competitive tournament, and there are no standings or winners. However, teams will be awarded “Lady Byng” points for skill, spirit and good sportsmanship. These points are assigned to each team by its opponent at the end of a game. (Game officials will also be involved in awarding Lady Byng points.) At the close of the tournament, a prize will be given to the team with the highest Lady Byng score.
3. Games consist of two fifteen-minute periods, with a warm-up period of about five minutes. An off-ice official will referee each game.
4. Each team is guaranteed three games.
5. Teams are asked to bring two sets of jerseys, light and dark.
6. All players must be eighteen years of age or over.
7. All players must wear hockey helmets with some kind of facial protection (cages, visors or half-visors). Additional equipment is strongly encouraged.
8. Nets will be “pond hockey” style (i.e., crossbar roughly six inches off the ice).
9. No goalie equipment or goalie sticks are permitted. Players cannot fall on the ice to protect their goal area.
10. Penalties will be called for rule infractions. A minor penalty will result in a caution by the game official; in addition, the offending team will lose possession of the puck. A major penalty will result in the ejection of the offender(s) from the game. Game officials will keep track of infractions and use them to determine Lady Byng scoring.
11. Raising the puck is not allowed (minor penalty).
12. Body checking and slap shots are definitely not allowed and will result in a major penalty. Any player who abuses game officials will incur the same penalty.
13. Should the puck leave the ice surface, the last team to touch it loses possession.
14. An attacking team must be past centre ice to score a goal. There are no offsides. After a goal, the scoring team must give their opponents half-ice.

EXTENDED Please register by January 29 – there is only space for 12 teams so don’t delay! It looks like a cold front is coming in and teams are registering! The tournament is shaping up to be good times for all involved.
Mr. Hugo Proulx, inventor of le lit biscuit will be at the tournament with his famous illuminated pucks. We can play into the dark with the illuminated puck!

Bring your friends and have some fun!
Ottawa Riverkeeper is proud to announce that the Britannia Yacht Club (BYC) has generously offered to host the Pond Hockey Tournament. The BYC facilities will be available for all pond hockey participants. This is fabulous given that the wind can whip up on the river and the thought of sitting by a warm fire sipping cider and munching on chili while waiting for my next game is very appealing!
We are looking for a few more volunteers to round out our team. Specifically we still need someone who is willing to help prepare the ice surface. We also need folks to help the day of the tournament. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Jamie Findlay at (613)234-9171 or by email: jfindlayesq@yahoo.ca
This is our first year organizing this event and we need your help to spread the word. Consider downloading a poster, printing it and hanging it at work or at your local arena or cafe.
