Is it a drain, a ditch or a stream? What are the differences? And if it is a drain, what does that mean to me as a landowner?
Drains are complicated little pieces of geography. You might be surprised at the agricultural, environmental and commercial pressures on our local drains — and the regulations that surround them.
To understand more about our municipal drains and the provincial, federal and municipal rules that apply to them, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA), in cooperation with Mississippi Valley Conservation, South Nation Conservation, the City of Ottawa and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, is hosting a Municipal Drain Information Day.
Please join the RVCA on Saturday, May 31 from 9 am to 1 pm (registration and refreshments starting at 8:30 a.m.) at the Rideau Valley Conservation Centre (3889 Rideau Valley Drive, Manotick) to learn all about drains. Representatives from municipal, provincial and federal agencies will explain what a drain is, who looks after them, how drains are classified and how they are regulated. The agenda also includes an electro-fishing demonstration in a nearby municipal drain.
There is no charge but registration is required and space is limited. Call 613-692-3571 ext 1100 or e-mail diana.pratt@rvca.ca with your name and phone number.
