Sawmill creek Stream cleanup

Sawmill Creek, 9AM-2PM - Saturday, September 16, 2006

The City Stream Watch program and its volunteers will be performing a cleanup on Sawmill Creek as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The cleanup will be held on September 16th from 9am to 2pm. Volunteers will meet at Heron Park Community Centre where they will be split into groups, given all necessary equipment and assigned to a stretch of stream to clean up. More details and directions on how to get there will be sent out after signup is complete. Volunteers will be treated to lunch and beverages, which will be provided by the Monterey Inn Resort, Canada’s first carbon neutral company.

The Vancouver Aquarium started the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup over 12 years ago. With support from TD Canada Trust, the program has grown from a local beach cleanup to a national program with participants in every province and territory. Each September, hundreds of thousands of participants from around the world join Canadians to clean up their shorelines.

Besides removing shoreline litter from a local shoreline, you will also be collecting important data. With every cleanup, participants fill out a Data Card – which is provided as part of their cleanup materials package. As every piece of shoreline litter is removed from the shoreline, its details are recorded on to the data card. That data card is sent back to the Vancouver Aquarium after the cleanup is completed. The Vancouver Aquarium tabulates all the information provided on the data cards and then sends in the national totals to the International Coastal Cleanup. This data is then used by the International Costal Cleanup to affect legislation about shoreline litter around the world.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is the perfect opportunity for school groups, community groups, families, and concerned individuals to get involved in a hands-on conservation program. To register as a volunteer for this project please send an email confirmation to the address below.
