Held at the NAV Canada Conference Centre in Cornwall from Tuesday to Thursday, May 16 to 18, 2006. The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences will host its 13th annual International Conference on the St. Lawrence River/Great Lakes Ecosystem. The event will be presented in partnership with the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, the South Nation Conservation Authority, the University of Ottawa and Conservation Ontario.
This year’s conference follows up on the theme of source water protection discussed with great interest and vigour last year. The conference will highlight progress since that time on source water protection, from recent legislation and planning to the challenges for implementation to be faced now and into the future.
Source water protection is defined as plans and actions taken to secure the integrity of streams, rivers, lakes or underground aquifers used to supply private wells and public drinking water. The conference will provide an excellent venue to exchange and gather information on the latest in research and policy and the issues faced by agencies and governments.
From the latest in research advances to the challenges faced by agencies and governments, this year’s conference will provide a platform to discuss and explore what must be done to protect these sources. Highlights of the conference will be several panel discussions debating the priorities for source water protection.
The River Institute’s international conferences have become valuable meetings for scientists to share knowledge and collaborate. Such communication is needed to ensure intelligent, cost effective and sustainable management of all of Ontario’s water sources including the St. Lawrence/Great Lakes ecosystem.
The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences carries out research studies of large river systems with a focus on the St. Lawrence River/Great Lakes ecosystem. It has worked extensively on water and air quality issues with public and private agencies, and is widely recognized for fostering public involvement through innovative environmental education and community action programs.
