Volunteer spotlight

Ottawa Riverkeeper relies heavily on volunteers. Many individuals offer their time and skills to support our work. We’re putting the spotlight on few of our wonderful volunteers and the great work they accomplished.

Karen

Karen Maw (right) received the 2008 Daniel Brunton Outstanding Volunteer Award in recognition of her dedication, commitment and passion for protecting and preserving the Ottawa River. Karen has been volunteering one day a week since June 2007 and has helped out at countless events. Recently, Karen joined us at the Ottawa Folk Festival to promote Ottawa Riverkeeper and the use of reusable, stainless steel water bottles and municipal tap water.

alan

Alan Todd is a key player in the production of Ottawa Riverkeeper’s River Report. Alan was instrumental in putting together a professional team to produce and deliver the River Report, including EarthLore Communications who designed the report. Alan is also actively shooting pictures from around the watershed for our photo data bank. Click here to read Alan’s story: The Mississippi River – A “Fish Story”.

Mark Patrie Musk

Mark Patry is a chartered accountant by profession and an avid fisherman by passion. Mark is a principal with Welch & Company, an Ottawa-based public accounting firm. After hours, he graciously volunteers his time and skills as the treasurer for Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Board of Directors. For the past few years, Mark has contributed significantly to the organization by acting as treasurer and keeping our accounting up to date. Fishing has always been Mark’s passion and he gets out on the water more than most Waterkeepers! He is a member of the Ottawa Fishing Club and Muskies Canada. Over the years Mark has witnessed many changes in the river that affect fish and their habitat including invasive species, shoreline development and increased boat traffic.

Laurel

Laurel Rosene, an avid paddler, believed it was time to give back to our Mighty Ottawa River. She organized the first Fall Paddle and Garbage Pick-up which has become an annual event. Click here to read about Laurel’s experience.
