This past week has seen a number of developments relating to drinking water safety in the province of Ontario. On Saturday, April 29, Laurel Broten, Minister of the Environment, announced $375,000 in funding for the Well Aware program run by Green Communities Canada. Well Aware provides property owners with information on well maintenance and construction through educational materials, community forums, and other delivery mechanisms. The importance of public education and outreach for private well owners has been highlighted in a number of reports, including those prepared by the Source Protection Technical Experts and Implementation Committees. If private wells are used improperly, they can provide pathways for contaminants to enter into groundwater aquifers.
