Since 2003 Ottawa Riverkeeper has been voicing our concerns about the proposed boat bypass around the Chats Dam Falls. A private developer, the Ottawa River Project has submitted a development proposal to build and operate a boat bypass around the Chats Falls Dam. The City of Ottawa has agreed to contribute $350,000 to the project. The proposal has changed significantly over the years, thanks to a strong opposition from local citizen groups and Ottawa Riverkeeper. Originally the plan was to take the bypass through Fitzroy Provincial Park, then the ecologically significant Morris Island Conservation Area, then Willola Beach…
Ottawa Riverkeeper is encouraged that the proponent and the MNR are listening to public concerns over some of the proposed launch sites, however we feel that approval of the boat bypass project in its current form would pose significant risks to the integrity of the Lavergne Bay ecosystem on the Ottawa River.

Ecologically Significant Lavergne Bay – Proposed upstream location for boat bypass
This exceptional ecosystem is no place for increased boat traffic!
