Interprovincial Bridge Crossings

The search is on for a new Interprovincial Crossing over (or under?) the Ottawa River. An Environmental Assessment Study is being led by a steering committee under the funding partnership of the National Capital Commission (NCC), the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ). It is being guided by a study team consisting of the funding partners and the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau.

Ottawa Riverkeeper has been invited to participate in the Public Consultation Group to provide two-way dialogue between our organization and the consultants responsible for leading the environmental assessment for the river crossing. Environmental impact on the river is inevitable with any of the proposed crossing locations and Ottawa Riverkeeper will convey our concerns to the consultants and the public.

NEW! Preferred Interprovincial Corridor Identified

Phase 1 of the study is being led by a joint venture consultant team of ROCHE-NCE. They have assessed the needs and justification for future crossing(s) of the Ottawa River between the City of Ottawa and the Ville de Gatineau. A total of ten interprovincial corridors were evaluated and ranked by a technical evaluation committee comprised of a diverse group of representatives from all levels of government, technical stakeholders and the consultants.

The Consultants’ preliminary findings identify the Kettle Island corridor as a first priority project for implementation and for more detailed assessment in the subsequent phase two environmental assessment.

Read the Sept. 4, 2008 Press Release from the NCC for more details.

These draft findings will be presented for public consideration and consultation during the fourth round of public consultation scheduled on September 23 and 24, in Ottawa and Gatineau respectively.
