By a vote of 12 to 9 City Councillors have failed to ban the cosmetic use of pesticides in the City of Ottawa. Ottawa continues to lag behind more progressive cities like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Chelsea, Hudson…
Ottawa City Council was still debating the pesticide issue at 6 pm tonight with more motions to come then Rogers 22 went off air. The pesticide by-law debate took more time at today’s council meeting than the city budget but in the end citizens of Ottawa will have to wait until the 2006 Election campaign and elected 11 new councillors who care more about children than chemical. The pesticide by-law vote lost 12 to 9. Had it passed it would of been one of the WEAKEST pesticide by-laws in Canada. Even at that Rick Chiarelli and Shawn Little failed in their motion to weaken it further.12-9. Then Rick Chiarelli made another attempt at to introduce a plebiscite which also lost 11-10.
Mayor Bob Chiarelli stated that a strong pesticide by-law will be a part of his election platform and he’ll take on any and all challengers starting in Jan 2006.
