The wettest January day on record sent millions of litres of raw sewage into the Ottawa River.
The city estimates 120 million litres of raw sewage and untreated waste water overflowed the sewage system and into the historic waterway on Monday.
The Ministry of Environment, Ottawa Public Health and downstream water system operators have been notified of the spill.
