FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, June 15, 2007 – Ottawa Riverkeeper is inviting the media and the public to attend its Annual General Meeting on June 19 at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre in Britannia Park at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the problems facing the Ottawa River.
More than 1.6 million people rely on the Ottawa River for their drinking water, power and recreation, yet beach closures, industrial pollution and untreated sewage continue to put pressure on the health of the watershed.
“We have a long way to go before the river is treated with the respect it deserves,” says Meredith Brown, Riverkeeper and Executive Director.
“We look forward to hearing from the public about their concerns and we are excited to tell them about our new initiatives,” says Ms. Brown.
One of those initiatives is a three-year study, which will prioritize science-based research and let Ottawa Riverkeeper report more quickly on the changing health of the river and the implications of cumulative actions.
Ontario Trillium Foundation recently announced their continued support to Ottawa Riverkeeper by granting the not-for-profit organization $116,000 over two years to support their education and stewardship projects. Ottawa Riverkeeper is expanding and strengthening their network of river stewards who act to protect the river.
In addition to a presentation from the Riverkeeper, Marshall Maruska Aerial Photography will take the audience on an amazing “photographic flight” from Ottawa to Montreal.
