The Harper government plans to spend billions of dollars over the next seven years to back up new national standards aimed at reducing the raw sewage now pumped into Canadian waterways. “This is going to be probably one of the biggest environmental steps forward as part of our federal infrastructure spending,” Environment Minister John Baird said yesterday in an interview. “I think it would shock most Canadians to learn about the amount of raw sewage going into our rivers, lakes and oceans.” Mr. Baird admitted it would take at least 20 or 30 years to adequately upgrade the infrastructure and phase in the new rules.
