Pack away the swim trunks and towels for another year—Ottawa’s beaches have closed.
It was a successful summer for two of the four public beaches, but for Westboro and Petrie Island this was the summer of their discontent.
Britannia Beach issued a no-swimming advisory only once out of 64 days, while Mooney’s Bay closed just five times.
But if Westboro was your beach of choice, you had more than a one-in-three chance the water would be too contaminated to take a dip in. Disappointed swimmers were turned away 23 times, or 36% of the summer.
Petrie Island fared only slightly better, closing 19 times.
