A lack of funding from the upper levels of government and slow negotiations with the NCC for land are being blamed for delays in the construction of storage tunnels to stop sewage overflows into the Ottawa River.
The City is exploring building a $150 million storage tunnel system to collect sewage overflow during heavy rainfall events and prevent it from flowing into the river.
An update on the Ottawa River Action Plan says a major constraint for the project is securing land for the proposed tunnel alignments from the National Capital Commission.
Staff say the City continues to meet with Federal officials to secure land and easement agreements, adding it has caused “delays to the project”
The Environmental Study Report and the Functional Design are eight months behind schedule due to the lack of funding and land negotiations.
Mayor Jim Watson continues to lobby the Federal and Ontario Governments to fund one-third of the costs of the new storage tanks.
