City studies Pinecrest Creek retrofit

yournepean.com - Monday, December 14, 2009

The City of Ottawa is studying the retrofit of Pinecrest Creek with storm water management measures.

The goal is improve water quality in the creek and the Ottawa River and thereby reduce closures at Westboro Beach. The measures are required because the area was developed before the City was required to manage storm water.

The retrofit study is one of 16 short-term projects in the City’s Ottawa River action plan. This study will be used as a template for other retrofit projects across the City.

The study will consider measures such as disconnecting downspouts to reduce storm water at the source, measures to allow storm water to infiltrate the ground such as grass swales and perforated pipes, ponds to hold storm water and release it slowly and stream rehabilitation projects to reduce erosion.

A preferred option is expected to be presented in the spring.

More information on the project can be found at www.ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/pinecrest_westboro/ohone_en.html. Residents can submit their comments on the retrofit options to Darlene Conway, senior project manager at 613-580-2424, ext. 27611 or darlene.conway@ottawa.ca
