The City of Ottawa wants two city members to sit on a Steering Committee for the Rideau Canal Landscape Strategy.
Parks Canada has launched the initiative to identify the visual setting of the canal and to develop guidelines that can be used by all when assessing development in the Rideau Canal corridor. The Steering Committee will be made up of representatives from each municipality and county, as well as representatives from the conservation authorities, the Province, First Nations, Parks Canada and the National Capital Commission.
A report for next week’s Planning and Environment Committee meeting recommends the city request that Parks Canada amend the proposed governance model to include two City of Ottawa representatives.
Staff say the character of the Rideau Canal changes dramatically within the boundaries of the city, and in order to ensure that the issues associated with the canal are properly represented, the city should request an additional member on the panel.
