The Planning and Environment Committee will debate a motion today to put a moratorium on new building in Ottawa’s west-end.
Councillor Peggy Feltmate tabled a motion calling for the city to stop all new building projects until the City of Ottawa concludes its investigation into what happened during the flooding on July 24th.
More than one-thousand homes in Kanata and Stittsville suffered damage after heavy rain caused flooding and sewer back-ups.
A staff report into the flooding concluded the large amount of rain exceeded the system’s normal operating capacity, leading to sewer surcharges that flooded basements. Staff also say communities “most affected by the flooding” were built before current design standards were implemented.
The motion asks staff to run the modeling for water levels in the Carp River with data updated to reflect the July 24th storm and the super-saturated soil conditions and assess the impact on both existing developments and plans for development in the City of Ottawa.
