Counties will raise stink over sewage spills from Ottawa

gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca - Tuesday, August 11, 2009

The last “accidental” dump of untreated sewage into the Ottawa River from the City of Ottawa is one “accidental” dump too many as far as Champlain Township Mayor Gary Barton is concerned. His colleagues on the United Counties council agree.

“There seems to be a thousand reasons why sewage spills keep occurring,” Mayor Barton said during the counties council’s Aug. 11 committee of the whole session.
Barton noted that the most recent accidental spillage of Ottawa’s sewage into the river was a highlight discussion item during the last session of Champlain Township council. Ottawa city officials estimated about 175 million litres of raw sewage ended up overflowing into the river during the first week of August because of the heavy rainfall from recent storms.

The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) will send a letter of concern, along with some words of rebuke, to the City of Ottawa about the latest dumping of untreated sewage into the Ottawa River from the national capital. The same letter will also go to the Ministry of Environment with a request that the ministry take swift and strong action to either fix the problem or have the City of Ottawa fix it.
