OTTAWA — Tree-cutting seemed to begin in the Beaver Pond Forest Monday morning, with heavy equipment in the woods and about a dozen protesters decrying the controversial work.
KNL, a partnership of Urbandale and Richcraft, plans to build a subdivision on the property in northwestern Kanata, under an agreement to preserve parts and develop parts of the land that it struck with the former city of Kanata 30 years ago. Environment activists and neighbours have argued the forest on the site should be preserved for ecological and heritage reasons.
The company brought in security guards and police protection Monday morning and most of the site was inaccessible, but near Goulbourn Forced Road on the western edge of the property, the sound of heavy equipment cutting trees could clearly be heard.
More equipment was expected to arrive later Monday, with the cutting to begin in earnest soon.
More to come.
