Petrie Island was the destination of choice for east-enders on Canada Day.
Thousands of people flocked to the island to soak in the sun, take part in children’s games, groove to the music and twirl on amusement park rides.
After weeks of negative publicity involving the accidental discharge of raw sewage, Petrie Island was the focal point of end-end Canada Day festivities. While the beach was closed for health reasons because of a heavy rainfall on Monday, many families frolicked in the water.
The main stage featured science tricks, exotic animal presentations and karate demonstrations. New this year was a midway that proved to be popular with children and teens.
As the sun set, musical entertainment took the stage, including Random, Doubleback and the Ricky Paquette Band. The event culminated with a dazzling fireworks display sponsored by the Orleans Star, Weekly Journal and L’Express.
The newspapers also hosted a tent which invited revelers to stop by and answer this question: Why are you proud to be Canadian? The best answers and photos will be published in the July 4 issue of the Weekly Journal.
