Flood grant would cost $1.4M, report says

Patrick Dare, Ottawa Citizen - Wednesday, October 21, 2009

A one-time grant for homeowners flooded this summer would cost the city about $1.4 million, according to a city report.

The report, going to the planning and environment committee next week, was based on a motion from council to explore a onetime compassionate grant of $1,000 to homeowners who have been flooded three times in 15 years.

Many of the homeowners in the Kanata area who saw the worst flooding on July 24 this year, when an intense rainstorm hit the city, were facing their third flood. Some could not get insurance because of previous flooding.

City staff isn’t recommending that the grant program go ahead. It would be up to the planning and environment committee, and then city council, to approve the program.

It would cost an estimated $1.4 million, including $200,000 to administer the grants. The city does not have solid records on who has been flooded over the years and homeowners would be expected to show proof or swear an affidavit.
