The South Nation Conservation is offering landowners help to correctly decommission their unused wells.
The authority says unused wells are a direct pipeline to aquifers, allowing for contaminated runoff to possibly enter the groundwater supply.
Landowners in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and rural portions of the City of Ottawa can apply for the decommissioning program.
The Eastern Ontario Water Resources Committee and the South Nation Conservation provide grants amounting to 100 per cent of decommissioning costs to a maximum of $1-thousand per well.
