High bacterial count closes Ottawa beaches

Liam Casey, The Ottawa Citizen - Monday, July 21, 2008

OTTAWA – Westboro and Petrie Island beaches have been closed due to high bacterial count. Ottawa’s other beaches at Mooney’s Bay and Britannia remain open with lifeguards on duty from noon to 7 p.m.

Gatineau’s Leamy Lake beach remains closed because of raised water levels that pose a safety risk to swimmers.

The public still has access to the National Capital Commission’s other beaches at O’Brien, Blanchet, Breton, Parent and La Pêche in Gatineau Park. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Call 613-580-6744, ext.13219 for automated updates on water quality for Ottawa beaches, 613-239-5000 for conditions at the NCC’s beaches in Gatineau.
