Toronto’s former head of waste water will lead a city investigation into an August 2006 incident that saw almost a billion litres of untreated sewage and storm water dumped into the Ottawa River.
According to a memo from city manager Kent Kirkpatrick, Mike Price is expected to work with the municipal auditor general, Alain Lalonde, who is also conducting an investigation into the spill, and make recommendations aimed at ensuring something like this doesn’t happen again.
At the same time, Mr. Lalonde’s office is to determine what was known, when it was known, what was done with the information, what actions city staff took, and whether the city fulfilled its regulatory duties.
The spill occurred when an overflow sewer gate got stuck open during a rain storm.
