June sewage spill not reported to council until this week

Patrick Dare, The Ottawa Citizen - Thursday, July 24, 2008

OTTAWA – The City of Ottawa had another sewage spill, this one on June 14, which wasn’t disclosed to city council until this week.

A memo from the director of wastewater and drainage services, Dave McCartney, says that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment was notified of a sewage spill at the city’s Kent Street regulator device. The city estimates that up to 10,000 cubic metres of sewage may have spilled into the Ottawa River. The spill occurred because the regulator device was damaged.

Timely disclosure of sewage spills became a big issue when one huge spill in 2006 was not reported to the Ministry of the Environment, as required by law, and was only disclosed to council this year.

The city says it’s in the process of replacing the troublesome 50-year-old regulators that keep breaking down and allowing the spills.
