Monday’s rainfall caused 14 million litres of sewage to overflow into the Ottawa River.
About 840 million litres of sewage have overflowed into the river so far this year. That’s more than double the average annual amount. Ontario Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Watson recently said the city is taking a long time to deal with the sewage overflow problem.
In the next few weeks, the city will finish installing real-time control systems at five points along the downtown sewer network. City officials say the new technology will reduce overflows by 65% in time for next summer.
