The Warden of Prescott-Russell says communities downstream along the Ottawa River are concerned about sewage overflows into the Ottawa River.
East Hawkesbury Mayor Rob Kirby told CFRA’s Afternoon Edition that the Council passed a resolution at its last meeting asking the City of Ottawa to explain the sewage overflows.
Kirby says one of the Mayors of the region brought up the issue, and a resolution was approved to send a letter to Ottawa.
More than 800 million litres of raw sewage has overflowed from Ottawa’s sewer system and into the Ottawa River so far this year.
The City of Ottawa said last week the projects underway on three regulators will reduce sewage overflows by 55 per cent by this fall.
Kirby tells CFRA News the Ottawa River is a beautiful spot, and he “hopes” the sewage overflows are stopped.
He adds the Ottawa River is important to municipalities in Prescott-Russell, and sewage spills can ruin its future.
