NCC on board for river renewal

BY TRACEY TONG, METRO OTTAWA - Thursday, June 18, 2009

The National Capital Commission announced Thursday it will be working with the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau to improve the way it will protect the Ottawa River.

A co-ordinating group for the Ottawa River, with the priority of ensuring water quality, will be created.

The announcement builds on the momentum of the recent 6th Canadian Rivers Conference here that focused on how protect Canadian rivers so they can continue to provide ecological, economic and social benefits to future generations.

“Today we offer a model of shared leadership for the environmental, social, and economic future of the Ottawa River corridor through the Nation’s Capital,” said NCC CEO Marie Lemay. “The facilitator or co-ordination role is particularly important due to the complex jurisdictional context of the Ottawa River corridor.”
