New field coordinator to bolster Canadian Waterkeepers

Canadian Waterkeepers - Wednesday, April 04, 2007

The Canadian Waterkeepers are hiring!

Canada’s Waterkeeper movement has been steadily growing since the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper first took to the water in 1999. Over the last seven years, eight new programs have emerged to patrol waterways in Labrador, New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. In 2004, Waterkeeper Alliance added a Canadian seat to its board of directors. In 2005, Canadian Waterkeepers held their inaugural regional conference. Last fall, we launched the first national Clean Water Workshop, pairing pro bono law students with our nine member programs.

Now, the Canadian Waterkeepers are hiring the first national Field Coordinator. The Field Coordinator will work out of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper’s office in Toronto and help our member groups with networking & capacity building, communications, and new Waterkeeper recruitment.

It is an exciting time for our members. Waterkeepers work on some of the most pressing environmental issues in the country, including sewage pollution, energy development, and water withdrawals. Our resources rarely match those of polluters and lobbyists. The field coordinator will help us pool our resources, hone our skills, and share our best practices. He or she will also help us identify passionate, committed individuals who want to become Waterkeepers in other Canadian communities.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Waterkeeper movement, please check out our online job description: More information …

And stay tuned, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper will be hiring again later this spring!
