New light bulbs for pollution plant cost $19,000

STEPHEN UHLER, The Pembroke Daily Observer - Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Pembroke Pollution Control Centre needs light bulbs, some $19,038 worth.

The bulbs are special ones, needed to make the facility’s UV lamps operate. They last about a year, and need to be replaced.

In a report to the city’s operations committee, David Atkinson, utilities superintendent, explained the UV equipment is used to disinfect waste water prior to it entering the receiving stream.

Under Ontario regulations, this secondary treatment of water is required before it is sent back into the Ottawa River, essentially cleaner than when it was first extracted. By using UV or ultra violet light to disinfect the water, the city avoids needing to use chemicals – which can negatively impact on the environment – to accomplish the same task.

The bulbs are purchased in bulk, and will be used to replace the 72 now in use in Bank 1B of the UV equipment.

This replacement has been planned for and budgeted under the pollution plant’s annual maintenance program.
