DEEP RIVER – The new owners of land behind the J.L. Gray Centre have asked council for permission to expand the residential project to six storeys. Present legislation allows for two or perhaps only three storeys.
A spokesman for the company, Five Rivers Planning and Engineer Consultants, said that would mean the new building would be about the same size as the Gray building.
He added that this change would be “good planning.” He told council the development would be a good mix of stacked town houses. Years ago the site was occupied by several dormitories.
SHAWVILLE – Gatineau Mayor Marc Bureau and Environment Minister Patrice Martin, chair of a special commission, have announced a $5,000 grant to the Ottawa River Keeper program. It was formed several years ago and is committed to supporting environmental concerns on and along the Ottawa River.
Residents of Ontario and Quebec are asked to be the River Keeper’s “eyes and ears” by reporting illegal pollution by calling 1888-9keeper or 613-864-7442.
CFB PETAWAWA – Canada’s largest supplemental educational program will soon expand from Pembroke to CFB Petawawa. The program is being made possible through an agreement between Kumon Canada Inc., Pembroke-Renfrew County Family and Childrens’ Services (FCS) and the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. It is based at St. Francis of Assisi School.
The Kumon method is a detailed attempt to stimulate interest in learning and improving Grades 1 and 2 level math and literacy skills of children facing difficulties or students prepared to take on a special challenge.
FCS executive director Jerry Muldoon said it has offered the Kumon program in the region for the last seven years free of charge for children in care.
“It is fantastic,” he said.
The Kumon method was developed in Japan in 1958 as math and reading centres by a man whose son was struggling with his school work.
RENFREW – Summer can be a fun time with its parties, beach outings and bar-hopping but for women, especially young ones, it can be a dangerous time. Jennifer Valiquette, manager of Renfrew Victoria Hospital’s regional assault care program, says the number of women seeking emergency room treatment due to sexual assault consistently goes up every summer.
All women, regardless of their age, should be prepared for the vultures lurking in our society.
