ENC News – The City of Ottawa is pleased that Ontario Environmental Commissioner Go rd Miller recognized the great strides being made by the city in protecting the Ottawa River, one of Canada’s heritage waterways.
The Environmental Commissioner released his 2009/2010 annual report. In it, he highlights the City’s Ottawa River Action Plan, a Miltie-year, multi-million dollar project to protect and preserve the quality of the Ottawa River.
The 228-page annual report calls Ottawa a “leader” for its efforts in this regard and the Commissioner calls on other municipalities to follow suit.
As a part of the Plan, the City of Ottawa has implemented Real-Time Control (ROTC) technology at several locations along its collection network, which has already significantly reduced the volume of combined sewer overflows into the Ottawa River.
The city’s plan also includes the provision of Combined Sewage Storage serving strategic locations in the City’s sewage collection system that, when combined with the RTC project and ongoing sewer separation projects will prevent combined sewage overflows to the River.
Other key elements of the integrated Action Plan will address storm water discharges, provide for ongoing water quality monitoring and reporting and public education and information.
