Organizations tied to Ottawa River given additional funds

Fred Sherwin Orléans Online - Friday, October 17, 2008

Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien and east end councillors Bob Monette and Rob Jellett dropped by Petrie Island on Thursday to present a pair of cheques for $50,000 to members of the Friends of Petrie Island and the Ottawa Riverkeepers

The money will be used by the two groups to promote better stewardship of the Ottawa River and the island.

Friends of Petrie Island runs an interpretive centre on the island which educates residents on the location’s ecological importance. In doing so the group raises awareness of the local habitat including the river and how the river and the island interact.

Ottawa Riverkeeper brings people together with a keen interest in protecting and promoting the ecological health and diversity of the Ottawa River and its tributaries. The organization advocates for responsible decision-making; advances public education and participation; and ensures compliance with protective regulations throughout the watershed.

The $50,000 grants to the two organizations is part of the city’s effort to clean up the Ottawa River’s image and improve public awareness of the river’s importance both from an ecological and recreational stand point.
