A stone’s throw from Parliament Hill, the river that’s been described as the “original Trans-Canada Highway” is now poised to join a national list of designated heritage waterways.
The Canadian Heritage Rivers Board, currently gathered for a conference in the national capital, quietly endorsed the Ottawa River’s addition last month to a select group of 40 historically important and specially protected watercourses across the country.
Finalizing the designation now requires only the signatures of Ontario’s Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield and federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice.
