Ottawa-area beaches open in time for weekend

The Ottawa Citizen - Wednesday, June 16, 2010

OTTAWA — The NCC is giving Gatineau’s beaches the green light for opening Friday, on what is expected to be a sunny, hot afternoon.

The beaches — O’Brien, Blanchet, Breton, Parent and La Pêche — all received excellent swimming condition status after water sample testing completed June 6.

During daily hours between 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. the beaches will be supervised by lifeguards. Beaches will remain open until Sept. 6.

The NCC asks swimmers to abide by these hours, when lifeguards are on duty and buoys mark swimming boundaries.

Parking is $6 for cars, $65 for a season pass and $18 for buses. The daily pass includes access to the Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park.

Facilities such as washrooms, change rooms, barbecues and picnic tables will all be available starting Friday. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent at La Pêche and Philippe lakes.

Beaches supervised and maintained by the City of Ottawa — Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Westboro and Petrie Island — officially open Saturday.
