OTTAWA — Ottawa’s mayor says it’s frustrating public beaches have been closed so much this summer.
Jim Watson says it’s time the city built underground sewage storage tanks to stop sewage overflows into the Ottawa River.
Watson says he has written to the federal and Ontario governments, seeking funding to build the $130 million tanks.
The Westboro Beach has been closed 13 times this summer because of high E. coli counts in the water, while Mooney’s Bay has been red-flagged 11 days.
Watson blames the higher amounts of rain this spring and summer for the closed beaches.
The city has said it has reduced the amount of raw sewage flowing into the Ottawa River.
