On April 14, 2010 the Ontario Water Conservation Alliance officially launched. Ottawa Riverkeeper is a proud partner of this groundbreaking conservation initiative.

WHO WE ARE

The Ontario Water Conservation Alliance is a coalition of citizens, organizations and businesses who believe an environmentally sustainable and economically secure province requires a comprehensive water conservation and efficiency strategy. The time to act is now. The Provincial Government has opened a dialogue on water issues and is planning new legislation. In response, the Alliance is advocating for a Water Conservation and Opportunities Act for Ontario.

THE FUTURE WE WANT

A water conservation strategy should re-imagine our traditional supply-oriented approach while maintaining public ownership, governance, and accountability. This means linking and de-linking water systems in new and innovative ways to protect, conserve, treat and re-use water across various systems (drinking water, storm water, grey water, sewer water and ecosystem uses of water). It also means we need to connect municipal reservoirs and public demand to their sources, planning for and conserving upstream supply to meet both human and ecological needs for future generations. The water infrastructure of the future should be green infrastructure – smart closed-loop systems that increase water efficiencies and decentralized treatment techniques that ease pressure on aging sewers and storm water systems; think protected headwater areas, using non-potable water in flushing toilets, buildings that constantly recycle water for cooling and heating, healthy urban forests that improve water quality and reduce run off and cisterns that collect and treat rainwater for clothes and dish washers. Ontario can and should be a global leader in this new approach.
