Senator disobeys environmental regulations and alters shoreline on the Gatineau R.

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

Ottawa Riverkeeper has been working with local residents of La Peche who are upset about recent shoreline work on the Gatineau River. The municipality of La Peche has begun legal proceedings against Senator Raymond Lavigne for a series of violations on his riverfront property including unauthorized clearing of trees, excavation and fill work on the riverbank, and for drilling a well within the floodplain. Despite the stop work orders issued by the municipality, the senator and his contractor continued to work on the shoreline.

The municipality has initiated four other legal proceedings against individuals doing unauthorized work that affects the health of the river. Although the municipality will exceed its legal expenses budget, it wishes to send a clear message to individuals and developers that you cannot violate the existing bylaws and regulations. Many residents of the Gatineau Valley have been urging the municipality to ensure the Gatineau River remains healthy despite the surge in development in the area.
