The Polaris Institute wants the Ottawa Carleton District School Board to make tap water more accessible for students.
The institute is recommending the board retrofit existing water fountains with “goose-neck” nozzles to enable refilling of re-usable containers.
The recommendation comes after a report for the board’s Business Services Committee suggested there hasn’t been much of a reduction in the amount of bottled water sold in public high schools.
The board does say the amount of bottled water purchased at the administration offices and for meetings has been reduced.
Trustees passed a motion last March to encourage the use of municipal water and reusable containers in place of plastic water bottles in public schools.
