Premier Adds Voice to Calls for Sewage Overflows to Stop

Josh Pringle, CFRA - Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Premier Dalton McGuinty wants the raw sewage spills into the Ottawa River to stop.

McGuinty admits it has been an “extraordinary” summer for rain, but residents believe it has happened frequently enough to warrant a plan to stop the overflows.

More than 800 million litres of raw sewage has overflowed the system and into the Ottawa River so far this year.

Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Watson said last week that Ottawa should make stopping sewage overflows into the river a top priority.

The city said last week the installation of Real Time Controls will reduce sewage overflows by 55 per cent by the fall, and 65 per cent by next summer.
