Residents watch flooding condidtions

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

With summer weather just around the corner, the spring flooding potential continues to stay high.

The latest rain forecast for the Rideau River watershed area includes a warning from the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, RVCA. Rain Wednesday night and Thursday may be enough to raise water levels to flood stages in the Long Reach of the Rideau River between Kars and Kemptville. No other areas in the Rideau River watershed are expected to be affected.

Despite the heavy rainstorm that swept through the area Tuesday evening, only a minor increase in water flow has been noted and no river flooding has occurred.

The rain still forecast to come to the area could be as much as 40 millimetres overnight. That amount of rain may cause water levels in the Long Reach to overtop the banks.

However, the impact is expected to be minor with access only minimally affected in the low-lying communities of Hilly Lane, Cedar Beach and Rideau Glen. The peak elevation is expected to be reached early Saturday morning.

The RVCA cautions area residents to be alert around the cold and fast moving waters in ditches, streams and rivers throughout the watershed.

The RVCA will continue to monitor weather forecasts and river conditions in the daily planning cycle of its flood forecasting and warning program. Based on those observations, either Watershed Conditions, Flood Advisory or Flood Warning messages will be issued as warranted.

If watershed residents would like to receive RVCA flood messages directly through e-mail, contact Andrea Larsen at andrea.larsen@rvca.ca or check their messages on Twitter or their webpage at www.rvca.ca
