Sewage Explosion in Glen Cairn Homes

Josh Pringle with Stephanie Kinsella, CFRA - Friday, October 30, 2009

The City of Ottawa is promising to notify residents one day in advance of air blasting of the sanitary sewers.

About 100 km of the city’s sewer system gets frequent cleaning to try to prevent flooding, while the rest of the system is cleaned over the course of years.

Glen Cairn resident Janice Bertrand tells CFRA News the cleaning process caused a sewer back-up into her basement on Wednesday with an explosion of human waste in her basement bathroom.

Bertrand says she was not notified ahead of the blasting, and she didn’t secure her basement toilet before the cleaning.

Manager of Environmental Services Dixon Weir says the city will contact homeowners regarding the clean-up costs.

Weir adds the city will conduct a review of the process.
