Sewage Flows into Ottawa River

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Josh Pringle, 580 CFRA News

Spring showers sent millions of litres of raw sewage into the Ottawa River this month.

The City estimates over 67 million litres of sewage overflowed the system and into the historic waterway last Friday due to the March showers.

Ottawa received a record total of 21 mm of precipitation last Thursday, followed by another 9.6 mm of rain on Friday.

Two million litres of sewage flowed into the Ottawa River due to rain and snow melt on March 5th.

The City does say new technology upgrades to the five sewer regulator sites eliminate sewage overflows by 65 per cent.
