Sewage Leak Explained

A-Channel News - Tuesday, May 20, 2008

A gate at a sewage treatment plant is getting the blame for raw sewage flowing into the Ottawa River two years ago. Heavy rain and overflow caused the gate to malfunction, sending sewage out into the water near the Petrie Island beach.
The beach was closed for 45 days in the summer of 2006 because of high E-coli readings.

The city says the gate was broken for two weeks before staff noticed it and fixed the problem. The incident has raised questions about why the gate was open for so long without anyone noticing. The city’s director of wastewater services says there have been breakdowns in communication before, but now they have set up a system between the public health sector and the wastewater service sector. Staff will now be checking all gates after heavy rains to make sure the problem doesn’t happen again.
